Chasing the Horizon
After a restful night at the Novotel, our morning started at the break of dawn. Our safari guide, John, met us right on time, ready to steer us toward our ultimate destination: the Maasai Mara. Our chariot for the next few days was a sturdy, dark green 4WD—built tough and elevated enough to conquer whatever off-road terrain lay ahead.
Leaving Nairobi behind, the urban sprawl gradually gave way to rolling green countryside. An hour into the drive, we made our first pitstop at the Great Rift Valley View Point. The morning air was remarkably crisp, laced with lingering mist from yesterday's torrential downpour. It offered a breathtaking panorama across the vast valley below, a quick breather for John before the long haul, and a welcome opportunity to stretch our legs.
Could This Be the Most Remote KFC in the World?
Back on the road, the tarmac eventually dissolved into corrugated dirt tracks. John chuckled and warned us to prepare for the classic "African massage"—a hilarious understatement for the relentless, bone-rattling jolts as safari vehicles jockeyed for position. Yet, the steady, rhythmic sway of the vehicle proved strangely soothing, lulling us into brief naps along the way.
About two hours later, John suggested picking up supplies for a late lunch picnic inside the park. To our surprise, we pulled into a modern, highly secured shopping complex in Narok. Tucked inside was a full-scale supermarket, clean restrooms, and an unexpected sight in the heart of safari country: a KFC. Seeing a familiar fast-food logo in the middle of nowhere suddenly felt like a slice of home. My parents and I didn't even question whether bucket-fried chicken qualified as traditional safari picnic fare—it was comforting, quick, and exactly what we wanted. We loaded up on fresh local fruit and our crispy provisions, then hit the road once more.
Crossing the Boundary into the Wild
As the distance to the Mara shrank, my anticipation reached a fever pitch. With dust swirling behind our wheels, my mind raced with what awaited us beyond the park gates. Would elephants casually stroll past our window? Would a pride of lions eye us like their next meal?
All our daydreams vanished into sharp reality the moment we pulled up to the park entrance. While John stepped out to handle the entry formalities, a few local Maasai vendors approached our vehicle to showcase their vibrant, hand-carved crafts and intricately beaded jewelry—a temptation for any collector. Before long, John returned with our clearance, and the gates swung wide open. We had officially arrived in the Maasai Mara!
First Encounters
Just beyond the threshold, a tower of giraffes greeted us from a distance, their graceful silhouettes looming over the landscape. I genuinely had to pinch myself to confirm it wasn't a dream. It felt like stepping into a surreal realm where wild creatures roam untamed and carefree across endless plains, while we were merely privileged observers passing through.
Shortly after, we stumbled upon our first apex predator: a solitary lioness lounging right alongside the dirt track. My heart pounded with a rush of excitement and nervousness—being that close to a wild lion felt far too intimate to be safe. Quite on the contrary, she couldn't have cared less about us. She merely shifted, cast us a mildly annoyed look for interrupting her afternoon nap, and promptly ignored us. Taking the hint, we quietly moved along.
The highlight of our afternoon arrived when a large family of elephants slowly crossed the road directly in front of our vehicle. Being so close to these gentle giants was awe-inspiring. With our bare eyes, we watched the tender, playful interactions unfold between the baby elephant and its parents as they guided it across the path. Experiencing such raw, unscripted nature on our very first day made the long journey entirely worth it.
Winding Down at Ikeliani Camp
As the afternoon light softened, we pulled into Ikeliani Camp, our home for the next two nights. Exhausted from the journey but buzzing from our first game drive, we fell asleep under the African stars.
But the adventure was just getting started. In Part 3, we take to the skies at dawn for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Mara, before hitting the ground tracks to search for sweeping herds of zebras and wildebeests—and a delightfully unbothered cheetah perched on a dirt mound, surveying its kingdom in the open. Stay tuned!
